Compare the Kia Sorento to The Competition

Kia Sorento vs. Honda CR-V and VW Tiguan: Compare Crossover Utility Vehicles in Madison Heights

The Kia Sorento is a well-rounded crossover with attractive accommodations, appealing amenities, and abundant practicality. It offers comfortable seating, flexible cargo space, and advanced tech features, including many standard driver aids. It's also among the few three-row models of its size, making it ideal for drivers who need extra seatbelts but wish to retain city-friendly maneuverability.

While the segment has no shortage of options, the Sorento delivers a compellingly complete package that's tough to beat. To give you some examples, here's a quick look at how it compares to two notable class competitors, the Honda CR-V and VW Tiguan.

Kia Sorento vs. VW Tiguan

  • The VW Tiguan is among the few compact/midsize crossovers that match the Kia Sorento with an available third row. However, passengers will find the Sorento much more accommodating, particularly those riding in the back. Compared to the Tiguan, the Sorento offers 5.1 more inches of second-row legroom and 1.7 more inches of third-row legroom. It also provides more personal space, with significantly more shoulder and hip room throughout the cabin.

  • The Kia Sorento (12.6 cubic feet) and VW Tiguan (12.0) have similar cargo measurements behind the third row. However, the Sorento has a clear advantage when you fold the rear seats, offering 38.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 75.5 behind the first. The Tiguan measures 33 and 65.3 cubic feet, respectively.

  • The Kia Sorento's base engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 191 horsepower, while EX and higher grades add a turbocharger, boosting output to 281 horsepower. It's also available as a 1.6-liter turbo-four hybrid (227 horsepower) or a plug-in hybrid with 261 horsepower and 32 miles of electric-only range. The Tiguan's lone engine option is a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 184 horsepower.

  • The base-tier Sorento has an 8-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get a 10.25-inch display. The Tiguan's standard and optional infotainment systems are 6.5 and 8.0 inches, respectively. The Sorento also offers a few options you won't find in the Tiguan lineup, including a Blind Spot View Monitor, second-row captain's chairs, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system.

Kia Sorento vs. Honda CR-V

  • The Kia Sorento's three-row layout makes it the obvious choice for larger families. However, even if you don't need the additional seatbelts, you'll appreciate the Sorento for its extra headroom, legroom, and shoulder room.

  • The Sorento (75.5) and CR-V (76.5) have closely matched max cargo capacities. However, the Sorento's sliding second row enables more practicality. Moving it back maximizes rear legroom while retaining 38.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Pushing it forward expands available storage to 45 cubic feet. The CR-V has 36.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats, increasing to 39.3 cubes by adjusting the rear load floor.

  • The Kia Sorento and CR-V have equal standard horsepower numbers (191 vs. 190). However, the Sorento can be equipped with a turbocharged variant, increasing output to 281 horsepower. The CR-V doesn't have a commensurate upgrade.

  • While both models have available battery-assisted variants, the Sorento Hybrid (227 hp, 258 lb-ft) is more potent than the CR-V Hybrid (204 hp, 247 lb-ft). The Sorento can also be had as a PHEV with 261 horsepower and an estimated 32 miles of electric-only range. The CR-V doesn't offer a plug-in option.

  • The Sorento's standard 8-inch and available 10.25-inch touchscreens are larger than the CR-V's infotainment displays (7-inch/9-inch). Plus, the Sorento's blind-spot and cross-traffic monitoring systems include steering assist, while the CR-V only has alerts. The Sorento also offers a few options that the CR-V doesn't, including a Blind Spot View Monitor, a Surround View Monitor, and ventilated front seats.
